Celebrate Jane Austen’s birthday with music and dance Jane Austen’s 236th birthday will be celebrated with music, dance and food at Omaha Public Library’s eighth annual Jane Austen Tea on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2-4 p.m., W. Dale Clark Main Library, 215 S. 15th St., 4th floor. Austen’s novels are filled with musical references, often containing detailed scenes of concerts, dances and private performances. The author loved music and faithfully practiced the piano every day. A live musical performance of songs from movie adaptations of her works, along with songs that she had in her private collection will be presented by Laurel Anderson. Anderson will play an encore performance with additional songs from the Regency era and other favorites. Anderson lives in Omaha and accompanies choirs at Omaha North High School. In her free time, she sings and plays for church services and accompanies two choirs of the Sing Omaha organization. An English country dance workshop will be taught by Peg Pidgeon, providing all with the opportunity to learn dances from the Regency era. Pidgeon is an active member of the Jane Austen Society of North America Nebraska Region and teaches English Country Dance at The Bluffs Center in Council Bluffs. “Everyone is welcome to this special annual event,” said Omaha Public Library Executive Director Gary Wasdin. “What better way to escape from the holiday madness than for a brief civilized tea with light English fare, in celebration of one of the world’s finest writers.” Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite teacups. The Bookworm bookstore will have books and holiday gift items available for purchase. The event is free and open to everyone. Registration is preferred online at omahalibrary.org or by calling 402.444.3399. This event is sponsored by the Friends of Omaha Public Library and the Nebraska Chapter of the Jane Austen Society of North America. Visit omahalibrary.org for information on additional holiday events at Omaha Public Library’s 12 metro locations.
