Award winning authors Natalie Guenther, Kim Schenkelberg and Celeste Snodgrass are the proud parents of a second book; It’s Really 10 Months Special Delivery: A Collection of Stories from Girth to Birth! Released on Labor Day of 2015, this collection of parent stories from bloggers, authors, writers and everyday parents will have readers laughing out loud, grabbing a tissue or two and totally appreciating the parenting experience of others.
The authors first book; It’s Really 10 Months: Delivering the Truth About the Glow of Pregnancy and other Blatant Lies was released in 2014 to rave reviews and became the recipient of many accolades including the Mom’s Choice Award. The ladies will tell you that their first book was written by accident as they put together private emails that they shared with each other, into book form. The result is a heartfelt and honest look at the gloriousness of pregnancy.
And while their second book deals with stories of pregnancy, this time the authors turned the reins over to other parents, including dads, to share the funny, gross, surprising and delightful world of having children. From fertility to delivery, the road to parenthood is full of humor and blunt truths. It’s Really 10 Months Special Delivery: A Collection of Stories from Girth to Birth! is a compilation of parenting experiences from people across the country and the results are the funniest and most outrageous stories to get you from girth to birth.
The authors of these hilarious, poignant and all too truthful books are three women, steadfast friends, who were all pregnant at the same time a few years ago and have cemented their bond over the years with humor, honesty and relying on each other for sanity. Natalie Guenther and her husband have three “impressively loud boys”. She is a social worker. Kim Schenkelberg married the youngest of ten children becoming a step mom to his sons and then adding two girls and a boy to their family. She is an adoption search and reunion specialist. Celeste Snodgrass and her husband have two children and have recently moved to Sioux Falls, SD. She works for an international child welfare and adoption agency. These three very busy ladies took some time to share about their new book; It’s Really 10 Months Special Delivery: A Collection of Stories from Girth to Birth! and more.
The authors we chose came from submissions, from bloggers groups, social media. We had over 150 submissions and it was quite a process to get the three of us to agree! We used a blind audition with the criteria being pregnancy, it had to be authentic and have elements of a love story. We picked collectively and then whittled down. I am so excited about the all of the authors entries, they fit great with our brand, I am very proud of all of them.
Some of our authors are bloggers with a fan base and others are not authors at all, they just found us. I, myself, was looking for content, relatable stories. When we had to choose we decided that when one of us really loved a submission; gonna die on this hill mentality, we had to consider it! There are a lot of different stories but I think my favorite is about a dad’s struggle during labor and delivery. What is common sense to women was a shocker to him. Great stuff.
We knew we wanted to give more people the ability to tell their stories about their experiences and given the response from people on the first book, we knew a second book with funny, raw, relatable stories from men and women around the country would be well received and appreciated.
Website and Blog
Our blog is geared to men and women being parents and is more parent than pregnancy. The blog was born from the book, which is backward from how most people do it. We seem to do most things backward but it works. Our website also has crafts, recipes and lots of satire as we poke fun at ourselves as we get older.
We knew that we had to grow our blog after the 1st book and as we got older. Our children were growing and we all were in transition from pregnancy to parenting and beyond. We felt that we needed to refocus our brand from only pregnancy to parenting.
I love that our blog isn’t just about pregnancy. The three of us have children of all ages and stages and we all have different talents. Our blog is a place we can share about our current parenting experiences and we occasionally post tasty, family-friendly recipes or fun crafty projects.
When the first book was started we had a big, honest discussion about how we were friends first. We went through bumps and disagreements and sometimes it was hard to be open with each other. But we were in this to promote each other and all of our successes! It has been so much fun.
Our backgrounds are in social work and this feels like a family situation. I love being in a community with these women in business and friendships. At a blog conference we went to, there was a strong message of creating a tribe of support. We are all women in various levels of success and we need to lift everybody up. When we started the first book people really reached out to us, now we help others succeed. This time around we are all about promoting our authors because this is there baby too. We want all of our authors to do well, use this as a spring board.
What is great about being in business with two friends is the level of openness and honesty that we all bring to the table. We actually talk about our thoughts, feelings, limits, etc and respect each others opinions and understand when one of us is just too worn out to do anything other than keep our children alive and fed.
